An essential choice for all sf collections. Throughout this adventurous, witty, and compelling novel, Green delivers sharp social commentary on the power of social media and both the benefits and horrendous consequences that follow when we give too much of ourselves to technology. – Joseph Fink, author of Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn’t Dead This is a book that thinks deeply and wisely about fame, wealth, the internet, and the future of humanity, but also, and I’m not sure how Hank pulled this off, it’s fun as hell. ![]() It builds in every way on the thrills of the first book, featuring twists that are even twistier, mysteries that are even more mysterious, and, most impressive of all, solutions to those mysteries that are as interesting as their set-ups. Hank Green is the New York Times best-selling author of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor. ![]() A book about people pursuing second acts after a traumatic crisis is pretty timely – and such a book, filled with compassion, bravery, smart mobs and stupid ones, and a hell of a metaphor for late-stage capitalism, besides. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ummm what? After having unrealistic sex with Eric, she has to sit on a bag of peas because her “yahoo palace” is injured. ![]() What is her obsession with being the consummate hostess? Pam and Eric have a physical altercation in her kitchen, but Sookie is concerned that she cannot offer her hairdresser another drink. What is most unfortunate is that Harris went through all the trouble to change her characters, but Sookie remained the same annoying person that she always has been. ![]() Sam, who has suddenly become Sookie’s best friend, now that he is dating another woman ( note: the woman is a problem because of course she does not match Sookie’s version of femininity - typical Harris). Yes, the vampire that Harris has spent so long constructing as a true southern gentleman actually said that. Then there is Bill, who believes that Sookie would win the Miss America best tits competition. What is really weird about this, is that the relationship between Pam and Eric has always seemed like a friendship based on mutual respect, even though he is her creator. He even goes as far as to become violent with Pam, when a simple command would render her helpless to disobey his orders. Eric is violent without reason and constantly needs Sookie to place her hand on him to calm him down. The characters that we have spent so many books getting to know do not act like themselves. All right, I will start off my saying that Harris is clearly bored with this series. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Readers will hope that Stroud follows up on certain questions-is it slavery to use a djinni? will shaky looming international politics affect the empire? who deserves our alliance? and who are the mysterious children ostensibly running an underground resistance?-in the next installment, sure to be eagerly awaited.
